Telenovelas are a popular genre of Spanish-language television series that push the boundaries of traditional drama. They incorporate elements of romance, comedy, and mystery. Over the course of an hour-long episode, they progress through multiple storylines and feature overarching themes. The stories typically revolve around wealthy families in Mexico, Central America or South America that live an opulent lifestyle in their mansions while struggling to maintain their status in society Also known as "soap operas," telenovelas are traditionally the most watched programming on Latin American television channels. Dozens of channels produce these soap operas across Latin America every day.. They air every day at prime time.. Unlike U.S. daytime television dramas however, telenovelas are often not the most watched programming on Spanish-language television networks in Latin America. This is partly due to the fact that the genre is considered "shallow" by many Latin American television audiences. In addition, because telenovelas are produced for Latin America, there are limitations on the language spoken by characters and storylines that must be reflected in their script. Furthermore, because these programs focus on families and interpersonal relationships, there is a strong emphasis on love and romantic interests As a result of these limitations, telenovelas generally do not lead directly to successful films or other forms of fiction. This is a significant difference from U.S. television dramas that have been adapted into feature films. Examples include "Dallas," which was popularly adapted for film in the 1980s and 1990s; and "All in the Family," which has been adapted for film twice, in 1971 and 1995. In recent years however, Mexican soap operas such as "El Señor de los Cielos" ("Lord of the Skies") and "La Reina del Sur" ("The Queen of the South") have become successful franchises that lead to eponymous feature-length films and other forms of fiction. These films reuse much of the original series' creative team and cast, and use its story elements. They generally follow a similar storyline to the telenovela from which they were adapted, but do not always recycle all the exact same characters. For example, in "El Señor de los Cielos," many of the minor characters from the series did not reoccur in the films. In addition, certain characters have been altered to fit their filmic roles better Telenovelas employ a broad range of genres and themes that entertain a diverse audience base in Latin American countries. Because each country in the region is so distinct in terms of history, nationality, and culture, there are naturally many differences among their telenovelas. But the fact that they are viewed by millions across the continent makes them one of Latin America’s primary forms of popular entertainment. Before the advent of television in Latin America, radio was the primary form of mass communication. This meant that daytime serials were made to appeal to a broad audience base. They therefore incorporated themes appealing to everyone from children to middle-aged adults. Eventually, television was developed in Latin American countries, which allowed for more advanced programs targeting specific audiences. For example, soap operas geared toward teenage girls were developed during this time period.
